The International Cycling Union (UCI) has decided to completely lift sanctions against Belarusian athletes, allowing them to compete under national symbols.

According to the official representative of the organization, the relevant decision was made by the steering committee during a meeting in the Italian city of Desenzano del Garda.

In addition, significant concessions were made to Russian representatives, who were given simplified participation conditions and allowed to compete in team races.

The organization’s official statement regarding Russian athletes states:

“They are still subject to the requirements of neutrality… Thus, any mention of Russia remains prohibited, in particular in start lists, results protocols and television graphics, and national emblems and symbols remain prohibited, in particular on the riders’ jerseys and equipment.”

The rule changes were approved based on updated recommendations from the International Olympic Committee in May. Belarusian athletes will now be able to compete under their own flag at championships and World Cups. At the same time, Russian riders no longer need to apply for neutral status, although the use of symbols for them remains blocked.

Recall that recently, the International Fencing Federation allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to once again compete in tournaments under national flags and with the performance of national anthems.

In addition, the European Gymnastics Federation allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions with the flag and anthem. The organization supported the decision of the International Gymnastics Federation to lift the sanctions.

Earlier, the executive committee of the International Gymnastics Federation decided to lift restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes that had been in place since February 2022. This means that they will be able to compete in international competitions with national flags and anthems.
