The Sun is preparing a strike: a red-level magnetic storm is approaching Earth
On Sunday, December 7, a noticeable increase in geomagnetic activity is expected on Earth: after a calm morning, a K-5 level magnetic storm is forecast during the evening, which belongs to the red zone and may affect the well-being of sensitive people.
Such data was released by the Space Weather Prediction Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
According to preliminary calculations, in the first half of December 7, the geomagnetic field will remain relatively stable – only slight magnetic fluctuations are expected. However, by the evening, the intensity of the solar wind will increase, and the Earth will enter the zone of influence of a more active flow, which will increase the K-index to 5 – a level that can cause moderate malfunctions in the operation of equipment, satellite systems and deterioration of well-being in weather-dependent people. Space weather forecasters emphasize that such forecasts can be adjusted every three hours.
What are magnetic storms and how do they occur?
Magnetic storms are sudden disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by streams of charged particles coming from the Sun. They are most often caused by:
solar flares that eject huge clouds of plasma into space – coronal ejections;
accelerated solar wind, which rolls onto the Earth’s magnetosphere and “shakes” it;
magnetic interactions between solar plasma and the planet’s magnetic field.
When these flows reach Earth, they deform its magnetosphere and create disturbances that we call magnetic storms.
Doctors’ advice: how to prepare for the magnetic storm on December 7
Doctors emphasize that most people experience such days without any changes in their well-being, but for sensitive groups it is important to follow simple recommendations.
1. Monitor sleep and rest patterns
Go to bed earlier, avoid overwork and spending too much time in front of screens.
2. Drink enough water
Light hydration reduces headaches and feelings of weakness.
3. Limit coffee, energy drinks, and alcohol
Stimulants increase the load on the cardiovascular system.
4. Take medication as prescribed
Hypertensive patients and people with chronic heart disease should not skip their medications.
5. More fresh air and leisurely walks
Short walks help stabilize blood pressure and reduce fatigue.
6. Reduce stress
Magnetic storms often increase irritability, so breathing exercises or short breaks from work are useful.
Doctors emphasize: a K-5 level magnetic storm is not dangerous for most people, but may cause a reaction in those who already have cardiovascular or autonomic disorders.
