Since the start of the war against Iran on February 28, the United States has lost almost 50% of its Patriot missile stockpiles and about 45% of its precision-guided missiles.
CNN reports this, citing sources.
According to analysts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies , which agrees with Pentagon estimates, Washington has expended a significant portion of its critical munitions during the seven weeks of fighting. Specifically, this includes at least half of the THAAD missile system’s stockpile.
The article notes that this creates a short-term risk of depletion in the event of a new major conflict. While the US has sufficient weapons to continue operations against Iran, its resources may be insufficient to counter a peer adversary, particularly China .
The Pentagon has already signed contracts to expand missile production, but replenishing stockpiles could take three to five years.
Yesterday, Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial shipping for the duration of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. This decision was part of the ceasefire agreement and impacted shipping safety in the region.
It was previously reported that French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a meeting with representatives of approximately 30 countries on navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz . The US is not expected to participate in the conference, and the initiative is being implemented with the participation of states that are not parties to the conflict.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump announced that the country’s navy will soon begin the process of blocking ships attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz.
