Ukraine has disappeared from US priorities: why it benefits Zelensky

I wonder if many of our fellow citizens understand that Trump’s election victory and his policy towards Ukraine are the best gift for Zelensky?

If you don’t understand this, then you don’t understand what Zelensky got after Trump became President of the United States again. And after a year and a half of Trump’s rule, it became simply undeniable.

And everything lies on the surface. After Trump won and Ukraine disappeared from the US priorities, the policy of communications and demands changed. No one in the US is forcing Zelensky to fight corruption, carry out reforms, not disrupt tenders and not violate laws. This fell on the shoulders of the EU. No one is calling from the US embassy anymore with demands not to interfere with anti-corruption bodies, does not say to fight tailoring and does not say to get rid of Tatarov and other “successful” Zelensky managers.

True, our Prosecutor General has now been summoned to Washington and strongly advised not to interfere with the donor-oriented part of the NABU and SAPO from fighting corruption. But in general, the US is no longer the gendarme that forced Zelenskyy not to fall into total authoritarianism.

And Volodymyr Oleksandrovych likes this. He no longer has to pretend to be a civilized politician and play president, but can be himself and resemble those who inspire him with their format of government – Erdogan and Lukashenko. The gendarme who forced Zelensky to behave according to the standards of Western values and thereby created discomfort for him has disappeared. And this is what Zelensky likes the most. Yes, Volodymyr Zelensky?

No one from Washington anymore tells him that he can’t behave like a tsar, no one from the US forbids Zelensky from persecuting the opposition and attacking freedom of speech, no one forces Zelensky to appoint those who won the competition, and not whom he wants to appoint due to nepotism and personal loyalty. No one says to follow corporate law and that you can appoint your friends, colleagues, business partners to any positions or save them from responsibility. No one from the White House demands from Zelensky to answer who Vova is, for whom they are building a house in Dynasty next to Andriy. And he likes it.

The only thing he doesn’t take into account is that it won’t always be like this. Trump just doesn’t like Vova right now, and Vova won’t always be president. And he forgets the main thing – he’s not a tsar and in the most difficult moments he will never rise to the level of his naive expectations, but will fall to the level of his competence and preparation. And we remember that level well. Because the taste of the “May kebabs” of the 2022 model is impossible to forget.

Given all this, it is possible to understand why Zelensky is satisfied with Trump’s approach to Ukraine. The only thing he forgets is that Trump will not be the President of the United States forever, and priorities may change. And they will change. And he is also annoyed by the new dependence on the EU and their demands to fight corruption, not to attack the opposition, and not to emulate Lukashenko. And this sincerely confuses Zelensky, who already likes being a tsar. But it will not always be like this.
