Ukraine will be covered by a series of strong magnetic storms: when to expect the peak of activity

In the coming days, Ukraine will be covered by a series of powerful magnetic storms that may affect people’s well-being and the operation of technical systems.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), geomagnetic activity will increase to the red danger level.
An indicator of such fluctuations is the planetary K-index, measured on a scale from 0 to 9: when the indicator reaches 5 and above, this indicates a strong magnetic storm.

October 28

On Tuesday, October 28, a K-index of 5 is expected, a red level of activity corresponding to severe storms. Symptoms of meteosensitivity may be experienced on this day, as well as brief communication disruptions.

October 29

Wednesday, October 29, will also bring a red-level storm — K-index 5. Solar activity will remain high, so people with cardiovascular disease should be careful.

October 30

On Thursday, October 30, the intensity of the oscillations will decrease slightly to K-index 4 (yellow level). This is a moderate storm that rarely affects most people, but weather addicts should take it easy.

Geomagnetic storm forecasts are updated every few hours, as solar activity data is constantly being adjusted. Therefore, we recommend that you regularly check for changes — the current forecast can always be found on the official SWPC resources or on our website.

What is a magnetic storm?

A magnetic storm occurs after powerful solar flares, when charged particles ejected from the Sun’s surface reach the Earth and interact with its magnetic field.
Such events can cause disruptions in the operation of satellites, mobile communications, GPS systems, and even power grids.

The level of influence is determined by the K-index:

1–4 — calm or slight activity;

5 and above is a red level, which is considered dangerous;

7–8 — very strong storms, during which the northern lights can be observed.

How storms affect well-being

During magnetic storms, atmospheric pressure changes, so sensitive people may experience headaches, fatigue, insomnia, or mood swings. Although there is no specific medicine, following simple recommendations will help you get through this period more easily.

How to support yourself during magnetic storms

Stick to your sleep schedule, eat healthy.

Limit coffee, alcohol, fatty and spicy foods.

Drink more water and herbal teas.

Go for walks, but avoid direct sunlight.

Engage in light physical activity.

Avoid stress and conflicts.

People with chronic illnesses should have their medications on hand.

A contrast shower in the morning is for vigor, a warm bath in the evening is for relaxation.
