Ukraine could face power outages of up to five hours in the event of new massive Russian strikes on the energy sector. At the same time, without large-scale attacks, the energy system should go through the summer period without significant restrictions for consumers.

This was stated by Vitaliy Zaichenko, Chairman of the Board of the National Energy Company “Ukrenergo”, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

According to him, the greatest risks arise in the event of repeated massive attacks on energy facilities. Russian troops continue to strike at energy infrastructure and try to hit both large facilities and distributed generation.

“Potentially, after massive shelling, it is possible not even 2–3 hours, but up to 5 hours during peak periods,” Zaichenko noted.

He explained that during the day, the electricity deficit can be covered through nuclear generation, imports, distributed sources, and renewable energy. The most difficult hours remain the evening hours, when consumption traditionally increases.

According to the head of Ukrenergo, the situation in the power system is now better than last year. Ukraine has increased the capacity of distributed generation, strengthened the protection of energy facilities, and continues to build new installations.

At the same time, he stressed that risks remain. The greatest strain on the system could arise if new attacks coincide with periods of intense heat and a sharp increase in electricity consumption.

It should be noted that emergency power outages have been introduced on the left bank of Kyiv.
