Marco Rubio said he doesn’t know if peace in Ukraine can be achieved through diplomacy. According to him, the US is trying to figure out whether negotiations can lead to an end to the war.
“I don’t know if it’s possible to achieve peace in Ukraine through negotiations. That’s what we’re trying to figure out,” Rubio said.
The US Secretary of State called the war extremely bloody and destructive. He noted that Kyiv is being hit every night by energy infrastructure, and the number of civilian casualties is growing.
According to Rubio, 20,000 people are dying every month on the Russian side. He emphasized that the number of victims of the war is increasing every month.
Rubio also recalled that Russia has a significant arsenal of nuclear weapons, and emphasized the importance of this factor.
The US Secretary of State also reported on talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Atlanta. According to him, they briefly discussed the possibility of a meeting between the US and Russian leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit next month.
It was previously reported that the United States and Ukraine see the United Kingdom, France, and Germany as the most likely representatives of Europe in future peace talks to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. At the same time, European countries are afraid of being left out of the negotiation process, but cannot agree on a common position and determine who exactly should represent the continent.
Recall that US President Donald Trump said that he expects to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in the near future. According to him, there is significant progress in relations between Washington and Moscow regarding the war in Ukraine.
