Von der Leyen: Ukraine will receive 6 billion euros for the purchase of drones

By the end of the second quarter, Ukraine will receive 6 billion euros to purchase domestically produced drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These funds are provided as part of a 90 billion euro loan program.
This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Ukrinform reports.
“In the spring, we said that we would provide a loan of 90 billion in one way or another. And we kept our promise,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
The first defense package under the loan “will be aimed at drones from Ukraine for Ukraine — worth about 6 billion euros.”
Ursula von der Leyen noted that within the framework of the 90 billion euro loan approved in April, the EU plans to pay the first tranche of 45 billion euros for 2026 before the end of this quarter.
A third of these funds will be allocated to budgetary needs, and the remaining two-thirds to finance defense measures, Ursula von der Leyen specified.
“While Russia is stepping up its aggression, Europe is stepping up our support for Ukraine,” the European Commission President added.
As a reminder, the European Commission expects that the first funds under the new €90 billion loan package for Ukraine may arrive by the end of the second quarter of 2026.
As is known, the European Union hopes to unblock a billion-dollar loan for Ukraine as soon as possible and impose new sanctions against Russia amid Viktor Orban’s defeat in the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
By the way, the future Prime Minister of Hungary, Peter Magyar, stated that Budapest will lift its veto on a 90 billion loan for Ukraine after the restoration of the Druzhba oil pipeline .
