Why MP Parubiy was denied state protection: the response of the State Security Service

The State Security Department (SSD) commented on the information that MP and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy, shortly before his murder, asked to provide him with state security, but was refused. They say that the department carried out tasks exclusively within the framework of the law.

This is stated in the statement of the State Security Service.

Thus, according to the law “On state protection of state authorities of Ukraine and officials”, the safety of the following officials is ensured in places of permanent and temporary residence:

• Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine;
• Prime Minister;
• Chairman of the Constitutional Court;
• Chairman of the Supreme Court;
• First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada;
• Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.
• First Deputy Prime Minister;
• Minister of Foreign Affairs;
• the Attorney General;
• Minister of Defense;

The UGO noted that during the term of office of such officials, the safety of their family members is ensured.

However, upon expiration of their term of office, such officials are provided with state protection only for 1 year, except in cases where a “guilty verdict” against them comes into legal force.

Recall that on August 30, former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada and member of parliament from European Solidarity Andriy Parubiy was killed in Lviv. He was one of the symbols of resistance to the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

It later became known that a shooter was being sought in the Lviv region, and a photo of the probable killer was published online. According to eyewitnesses,the shooter was a Glovo service courier , who then hid the gun in his bag. A video of the moment of the people’s deputy’s murder also appeared on social networks.

In this regard, a special operation “Siren” was announced in Lviv. The media reported that the police had allegedly already found the trail of the criminal .

The Verkhovna Rada leadership, people’s deputies, the apparatus and its employees expressed condolences in connection with the murder of Andriy Parubiy, a people’s deputy of several convocations and the chairman of the parliament of the VIII convocation. European officials also commented on this crime, calling it terrible.

Subsequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the murder of MP and former speaker of parliament Andriy Parubiy was carefully prepared . According to him, the SBU was also involved in the investigation. The head of state also instructed to immediately provide verified information to the public.

Meanwhile, the European Solidarity faction made an official statement about the death of Andriy Parubiy. Colleagues and friends responded to the murder, calling it cynical and cruel . “The murder of Andriy Parubiy is a shot in the heart of Ukraine ,” the fifth President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
