Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that we should prepare for a protracted conflict with the Russian Federation, which could last at least 2–3 years.
This is reported by The Economist.
“It will survive, albeit tainted by militarism and wartime corruption,” the publication notes.
According to experts, domestic politics pose a significant risk to the country’s prospects. At the start of the full-scale war, unity was almost complete, but since then “wartime pressures and corruption scandals have again exposed divisions.” One such scandal is called “Mindichgate,” which involves Zelensky’s inner circle.
The publication’s journalists criticize Zelensky’s personnel policy. Instead of attracting talented employees, the president of Ukraine, according to the authors, “has slipped into an increasingly detached, Byzantine style of governance.”
“His office controls a significant portion of the media landscape, including anonymous social media accounts used to discredit opponents,” the article says.
It is noted that the work of anti-corruption bodies was allegedly sabotaged through legal processes. According to the authors, the head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk, could have been removed for refusing to assist in the prosecution of anti-corruption structures.
“Zelensky does not tolerate strong people. He has created a cult of loyalty around himself,” the publication quotes one of the high-ranking intelligence officers as saying.
It is also noted that Ukraine has made significant progress on the front. Thanks to UAVs, Kyiv was able to thwart Russia’s offensive. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are destroying more Russian soldiers than the enemy has time to replenish reserves.
Some experts believe that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia could resume as early as this summer. At the same time, they call the most likely scenario a capitulation by one of the parties.
In particular, the situation in Russia is becoming increasingly tense: internal criticism is growing, the economy is stagnating, the Ukrainian attacks are ongoing, and sanctions are in place. The budget is estimated to be partially supporting high oil prices, but it is unclear how long this will last.
Previously, “Pryamiy” reported that Vladimir Putin may resort to using much more deadly chemical weapons against Ukraine in the event of a protracted or stalemated situation in the war.
For the first time in history, Germany has presented a military strategy that recognizes Russia as the main threat to European security. Official Berlin, in particular, plans to transform the Bundeswehr into the most powerful army on the continent.
