The work of the Verkhovna Rada this week has shown signs of a deep political and administrative crisis that threatens the fulfillment of the requirements for accession to the European Union. Despite voting for certain laws, Ukraine is showing zero indicators in key clusters on the path to the EU.
Diplomat and presenter Dmytro Chekalkin analyzed the effectiveness of the recent votes in the Ukrainian parliament and their impact on receiving financial assistance from foreign partners.
“There were such unpleasant statistics on the 10 clusters that bring us closer to membership in the European Union. There were exactly zero achievements. The score was 10:0,” Chekalkin emphasized.
According to him, the attempts of the leadership of the Servant of the People faction to mobilize votes with the help of “buns” did not yield the expected result – more than two-thirds of pro-government deputies are ready to support government initiatives, while others demonstrate open refusal.
The diplomat noted that the situation worsened due to the departure of some MPs to Transcarpathia, which effectively disrupted work on European integration bills. In addition, he adds, opposition forces were generally removed from the process of discussing important bills.
The studio guest emphasized that the situation is also complicated by statements about the unwillingness to change the country’s leadership until the actual entry into the union. Chekalkin suggests that such an approach may be part of a strategy of deliberately delaying reforms in order to maintain power indefinitely.
Recallthat Ukraine may be pushed back in the process of joining the European Union amid the activation of other candidates, in particular Iceland and Norway. This is due to financial risks and political concerns within the EU.
Instead, Prime Minister Yulia Svirydenko previously reported that the Ukrainian delegation in Brussels had received from the European Union the conditions for accession under the three final negotiation clusters. The government states that the next stage will be the fulfillment of the specified requirements, and only after that Ukraine will be able to proceed to signing the treaty on accession to the European Union.
Meanwhile, the current situation in the Ukrainian parliament also threatens the pace of rapprochement with the European Union due to internal disorganization. Despite the commitment to adopt dozens of legislative acts in various clusters, work has effectively stopped, and the lack of votes and ignoring minority opinions create conditions for deep stagnation .
