Conducting the electoral process under martial law is an illegal step that may cast doubt on the democratic nature of the results, and the use of the “Diya” mobile application to conduct voting poses a direct threat to the transparency of the expression of will.

This was stated on the air of “Pryamoy” by Oleh Synyutka, a member of parliament from “European Solidarity”, commenting on the start of the work of the parliamentary group on the preparation of the relevant draft law.

“We are convinced that this story with the elections is a rather artificial story for today, because we believe that holding elections during martial law is, first of all, illegal,” the politician noted, emphasizing that any expression of will during such a period will lead to a challenge to the results.

The opposition representative noted that instead of talking about voting, the government should demonstrate real steps towards democracy by restoring freedom of speech and returning independent TV channels to digital broadcasting. According to him, Viktoriia Siumar and Ruslan Knyazevich were delegated to the working group from the faction.

The faction’s position remains consistent: first, it is necessary to achieve a ceasefire and lift martial law. Only after the restoration of all rights and freedoms of citizens can we talk about the free expression of the will of Ukrainians, – added Synyutka.

In addition, he criticized initiatives to introduce online voting, pointing to the technical vulnerability of the system to cyberattacks by the aggressor. “If someone wants the elections to be rigged, they will propose to do it in “Diya”. Because let’s remember that the Muscovites have already simply disabled Diya several times,” the People’s Deputy explains.

At the same time, Synyutka emphasized that digital tools cannot guarantee the security of voting when hostile programmers are able to block the work of state resources. In his opinion, such proposals are an attempt by the authorities to secure the desired result even before the start of the real race.

As a reminder, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the people’s deputies to develop a bill on the possibility of holding elections during martial law. The initiative does not involve preparation for the elections, but was a reaction to statements by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.

Later, during a conversation with journalists, the head of state declared his readiness to stop hostilities along the current line of contact, the need to ensure the security of the elections , and the continuation of negotiations with the participation of the United States. He also reported on the failure to receive the promised volumes of air defense systems from partners and questioned Russia’s readiness to end the war.

It should be noted that there are currently no draft laws or bills in Ukraine that would regulate the holding of elections in wartime. However, the Verkhovna Rada is ready to prepare all necessary documents to ensure a democratic process even during hostilities.

By the way, earlier political scientist Volodymyr Tsybulko named four realistic scenarios for elections during the war . However, in his opinion, all of them are risky and can lead to unpredictable consequences.
