Ukrainian MP Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze called the president’s initiative regarding the possible holding of elections during martial law, as well as the introduction of online voting for Ukrainians abroad, a “surrealistic picture” that causes outrage.
The People’s Deputy from “European Solidarity” emphasized on the air of “Pryamoy” that the Constitution and current legislation of Ukraine directly prohibit conducting election campaigns under the legal regime of martial law.
“Democratic, fair, honest elections cannot be held in conditions when democratic principles in the state are completely violated, when there is no media freedom, when there are restrictions on conducting any campaign,” said Klympush-Tsintsadze.
The deputy also noted that it is unclear how to ensure secrecy and personal expression of will when using electronic elections, especially in conditions of military operations and constant cyberattacks.
She mentioned previous attacks on the “Diya” system and leaks of personal data, which makes such a platform extremely vulnerable. According to the MP, this is an attempt to shift responsibility and will not lead to elections recognized as legitimate, but only to a “farce.”
As a reminder, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the people’s deputies to develop a bill on the possibility of holding elections during martial law. The initiative does not involve preparation for the elections, but was a reaction to statements by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.
Later, during a conversation with journalists, the head of state declared his readiness to stop hostilities along the current line of contact, the need to ensure the security of the elections , and the continuation of negotiations with the participation of the United States. He also reported on the failure to receive the promised volumes of air defense systems from partners and questioned Russia’s readiness to end the war.
At the same time, Zelensky stressed the importance of participation in the elections of military personnel who defend the state, and also raised the issue of the possibility of voting for Ukrainians who are outside the country. At the same time, the president categorically stated the impossibility of organizing elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine controlled by Russia.
By the way, earlier political scientist Volodymyr Tsybulko named four realistic scenarios for elections during the war . However, in his opinion, all of them are risky and can lead to unpredictable consequences.
