Playing cops: why Putin threatens to deploy missiles against Europe

By announcing the deployment of intermediate-range missiles and abandoning the moratorium, Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin is seeking to help US President Donald Trump settle political disputes with Europe by using security issues, reminiscent of a kind of game of good cop and bad cop.
This opinion was expressed on the air of “Pryamoy” by Boryslav Bereza, a People’s Deputy of the 8th convocation.
“This is a pass to Trump. Because those medium- and short-range missiles do not threaten the United States in any way. But Europe needs protection from them. And after World War II, Europe hoped that the United States would protect them. Now it is not determined. Because Putin says: “That’s it, we are starting to play again, but we are taking a break.” And this is a pass to Trump. Trump can then urge him: “Let’s not do this after all.” He will say: “Okay, let’s not do it, but then let them not supply weapons to Ukraine or anything else.” So it is a game of good and bad cops,” Bereza noted.
In his opinion, in this way, Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin is trying to help US President Donald Trump settle disputes with Europe.
“Moreover, this is such a showy game that can help Trump if he says: “Look, Europe, I’m holding you back. And that’s it, we’re signing a new treaty with Russia.” By the way, they planned to sign it. I want to remind you that Trump also withdrew from this treaty in 2018. He will say: “We’ll sign this treaty again, it will work. But Europe, come on, help me do what I want there.” And this is again a game, a big, big game,” the former people’s representative believes.
At the same time, according to him, Russia is not capable of creating weapons that could truly pose a threat to humanity.
“Today, Russia cannot go into space, create on an equal footing weapons that would truly pose a threat to humanity. Because there is something to answer for. Moreover, the only question here is who will answer or not. And there is China, which really does not want anyone to use this weapon. Because in China’s doctrine, it is precisely a weapon of deterrence. Even threats of use for the Chinese are nonsense. In this they are just consistent,” emphasizes former People’s Deputy Borislav Bereza.
On the eve of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin said that Russia will deploy medium-range missiles and abandon the moratorium. He also added that after the expiration of the agreement between Russia and the United States on measures for the further reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms – February 5, 2026 – the Kremlin will adhere to the restrictions for another year.
Previously, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the Russian Federation does not consider itself a country bound by the moratorium on the deployment of medium- and short-range ground-based missiles.
Meanwhile, the American Institute for the Study of War is convinced that the Kremlin is deliberately creating the basis for breaking international arms control agreements , trying to prepare for a possible large-scale confrontation with NATO.
