This year, on Sunday, April 12, Ukraine celebrates one of the greatest church holidays — Easter or the Bright Resurrection of Christ.

Ukrainians carefully prepare for this day – they clean their homes and prepare traditional festive dishes, some of which are then consecrated in churches.

The period leading up to Easter is a strict fast, during which eating meat and dairy products, eggs, and sometimes fish is prohibited. Therefore, Ukrainian tables during the holiday look especially rich.

Preparations begin a few days before the holiday. The most important thing is to bake Easter cakes, which are sweet symbols of Easter. Traditionally, this is done on Maundy Thursday or Holy Saturday.

Another important element of the holiday table are painted or decorated eggs, called krashanki and pysanka. They are usually dipped in onion broth, hibiscus tea, or turmeric for decoration, and sometimes decorated with herbs.

After fasting, the table is diversified with food that could not be eaten before. Meat dishes are prepared – ham, sausage, roll, jellied meat, fish, and fermented milk cheese is baked.

In addition, mandatory attributes are salt, which signifies the connection between God and the people and is considered a talisman, and horseradish, a symbol of strength, health, and resurrection.

Let us remind you that at around 2:20 p.m. on April 11 , the Holy Fire descended in the Jerusalem Church of the Holy Sepulcher .
